Welcome to the new Horse Boy Camps website
Horse Boy Camps offer a chance for Autism families, generally with children of 2 – 12 years, to immerse themselves in nature, away from manmade stimuli, interacting with horses in a way that helps calm neurological trauma and seems to help promote communication. Although a camp will in no way ‘cure’ Autism, the effects for both child and family often seem to very beneficial. If you fancy and adventure without going too far out of your comfort zone, (well, maybe a little bit out of your comfort zone), then a horse boy camp may be for you.
We have several permanent sites in the UK and USA, each of which offer slightly differing experiences. From a stately home in Argyll, Scotland to the woods and fields of central England, to the green hills of Wales, to the rocks and water of the Texas Hill Country, there are a variety of environment and horse experiences on offer. Camps usually run for 3 – 4 days and are for the whole family. They do not offer respite – you cook for yourself and are responsible for your child at all times – but the experience can be joyful.
We use specific techniques (see the Horse Boy Method page) which Rupert Isaacson, the founder of ‘The Horse Boy Foundation’ and the inspiration behind the camps, found worked with his Son, Rowan. This story has been told in the book and film entitled ‘The Horse Boy’. The techniques that worked for Rowan seem also to work for a sufficiently large percentage of other spectrum children so much so that it seemed worth making these techniques more widely available. Hence Horse Boy Camps.
Above all they are fun and we can guarantee fun and adventure.
In addition to the regular Horse Boy Camps we also offer ‘sensory/chill out camps’ that introduce Autism Spectrum children to horses in a stress free manner.
We also include activities and riding for the non-Autistic siblings of the families that come.
